‘I felt the whole building shake:’ Mainers shaken up by earthquake off coast of York

YORK (WGME) — Mainers were “shaken up” after a rare earthquake off the southern Maine coast rattled parts of the state.

People across Maine and New England say they felt the earthquake late Monday morning.

The quake struck just off the coast of York Harbor a little after 10:20 a.m.

It was initially measured at a magnitude 4.1, then the U.S. Geological Survey lowered it to a 3.8.

That was enough for people to feel it.

“I was upstairs exercising and then all of a sudden the house started shaking like crazy,” Kittery resident Paul Miller said. β€œDishes we’re rattling in the cupboards.”

The earthquake located approximately 7 miles southeast of Nubble Lighthouse sent tremors throughout the state.

“Being in the basement out there on Nubble Light, it was pretty dramatic, a lot more shaking going on,” Stephen Brown said.

Joe and Kathryn Spies of Pennsylvania are visiting on vacation.

“I was standing in our bed and breakfast, and I felt the whole building shake,” Kathryn Spies said.

“It sounded like a jet taking off, and then the whole building shook, I’d say for about 8-10 seconds,” Joe Spies said.

York Emergency Management Director Nicole Pestana, whose phone was ringing off the hook, says it could have been much worse.

“Nope, nothing reported in terms of damages to structures or any injuries of any sort like that,” Pestana said.

With the earthquake taking place in the Atlantic Ocean, there was a fear of a possible tsunami, but those fears were put to rest early because it happened in shallow waters.

“So right now, USGA has not put out a tsunami warning or any alerts, so we are pretty good to go there,” Pestana said. β€œI’ve checked down at the beach, and waves are looking pretty normal.”
