ATLANTA β President’s Day is here, a chance to commemorate the birthdays of two former presidents – George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.
The national holiday started in the 1880s as a celebration of Washington’s birthday on Feb. 22, according to the National Achieves. One hundred years later, in 1971, a law changed the holiday date to the third Monday of February.
Here’s a look at what services and institutions in Georgia will be affected:
- Federal Offices: Closed, as President’s Day is a federal holiday.
- State Offices: Open, since Georgia does not recognize President’s Day as a state holiday.
- Schools: Many public K-12 schools and colleges in Georgia are closed; however, this varies by district, so it’s advisable to check your local school’s calendar.
- Banks: Most banks are closed in observance of the federal holiday, though some, like TD Bank, remain open.
- Postal Services: The U.S. Postal Service will not deliver regular mail, but services like Holiday Premium Priority Mail Express and Holiday Same Day Package Delivery will operate.
- City Offices: Some local government offices will be closed. So, you should check with your city and county offices.
- Businesses: Most retail stores, restaurants, and pharmacies are open.
