‘A few nerves’: Shock start to blockbuster semi-final

Alright, turning our focus now to the second match of the evening.

It’s been a decade since Madison Keys made her first ever grand slam semi final, at the 2015 Australian Open.

Aged just 19, she lost that match in straight sets to who else but Serena Williams. She’s been in five others since, but has won just one of them – to make an all-American final of the 2017 US Open.

Speaking on Wide World of Sports’ The Morning Serve, Sam Smith said some recent life changes could mean this is Madison Keys’ year.

“We saw her as a future slam winner and it hasn’t quite happened – she made a final at the US Open, let’s not forget that,” Smith said.

“Maybe it’s small things – she was recently married, her husband seems to be doing a brilliant job as a coach and was a brilliant former player himself.

“If you commit the rest of your life to someone, you can really trust them and she does trust him with her tennis as well.

“Maybe it’s just Madi’s time and everything is coming together and she is playing the best tennis of her career.”

But standing in her way tonight is Iga Swiatek, who has looked to be in the best hard-court form of her career.

“It’s a huge task in front of her, (but) she has the game to beat anyone. It’s about her holding her nerve,” Smith explained.

“She can not get off to a slow start … for me, she cannot afford to drop the opening set. She has got to get ahead early and stay ahead.

“I’d almost like to see Madison Keys come from the practice courts still warm and still sweating. Get straight out there, feet moving and anything to activate Madison as much as possible. Get some scoreboard pressure on Swiatek – nobody has been able to do that in this tournament.

“The motivation is huge for Madison. She was signed at 12 or 13 by Maria Sharapova’s agent as a future grand slam champion. She would have heard that so many times and that is still the quest for her and it’s about improving and getting better.

“She hasn’t achieved what many thought – and who knows what she thinks – is her potential. It would make everyone very happy to see Madison Keys win a grand slam.
