Inglewood homeowners prepare for possible flooding

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Homeowners in Inglewood are preparing themselves and their homes for possible flooding this weekend. Chris Svitek has been dealing with flooding there for the past 28 years, she says with new developments in the area it’s only gotten worse.

“Buildings have come up, different structures. And people who don’t know the history of the neighborhood might just throw things in the ditch thinking, ‘Oh, I can throw my tree limbs here. I can throw my brush in here,’” Svitek said.

She has a creek that runs right through her backyard where branches, garbage, and yard debris from piles up. While it’s dry she has to go to clear it out herself to give herself the best odds of keeping her yard from flooding.

“Let’s hope I can get enough of the debris out between now and then, while also working my job and living my life. And then I wait and see. I will be here on Saturday during the day, so I can pay attention to it,” Svitek said.

Inglewood is part of the city’s long term capitol improvement plan, but until change happens Svitek says she has to watch the water levels.

“They’ve had engineering folks come out and look at it and assess what can be done. So staying in touch with the people who can change it is the biggest thing for me,” Svitek said.

Svitek said she’s had to spend more than $15,000 to repair damages and protect her home from even more flooding.

“The ditch got wider and shallower, I believe, over the years. So that’s going to make it more of a threat to yards,” Svitek said.

Her hope is that Metro comes out to dig the ditch a few feet deeper, so it stop spilling over so often.
